Contribute for Lesbian Legacies

Please note:
Having brought our major projects to a happy conclusion, we dissolved Purple as of August 31, 2023. This site functions only as a repository of information about the Lesbian Legacies Endowment we created, and as a record of Purple’s herstory.

Plan for the future: Use your IRA rollover

Since 2006, Code 408(d)(8) has allowed owners of traditional and Roth IRAs to make direct gifts to charity and avoid the income tax that would otherwise be owed on an IRA withdrawal. The IRA charitable rollover had expired and been renewed several times during those years—often at the end of the year—leaving donors little time to plan their IRA gifts.

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015, signed by President Obama on Dec. 18, 2015, made permanent the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) for donors age 70½ and older. This is the age when you must begin taking the required minimum distribution from your IRA. If you don’t need this income for your day-to-day expenses and would like the satisfaction of seeing your gift make a difference, you can make a contribution of up to $100,000 directly from your IRA. It’s an easy way to make a great impact.

For more information on gift planning from your IRA, visit MSU Gift Planning: Make A Tax-Free Gift With An IRA.

Many other ways to give

Securities and real estate

These popular alternatives to cash generate a possible double tax benefit with income tax and potential tax on capital gains.

Matching gifts

More than a thousand companies throughout the country match employee gifts. Forms are available from personnel offices at these companies.

Bequests

Wills offer another avenue for giving to MSU and can take many different forms depending on the intention.

Life income plans

A life payment plan allows a donor to make a substantial gift and receive income in return. There are several different types which offer substantial tax benefits.

Retirement plans

Careful structuring and gifting of retirement assets can often preserve more assets for heirs while providing a gift to the Lesbian Legacies Endowment.

The folks at the library, and/or your own financial advisor, can explain the options and fill you in on the details of these alternatives.  Also, you can discuss making a gift of stock or through your estate plans with Caitlyn Dial, Director of Development, MSU Libraries, dialcait@msu.edu, 517-432-0032 .

To donate anonymously, you can make your gift by way of a donation to Purple earmarked for either the endowment or the expendable fund; if you indicate on your Donor Information Form that you want the donation to be anonymous, we’ll hand it on to the library without your name. If you have a trust or stock options/portfolio that someone manages for you, anonymous checks can be generated on your behalf.
